Spring has sprung and life is in full bloom! One way to soak it all in is to visit a farmers’ market and enjoy fresh, local goodies. There are many open-air markets in and around the Austin area that offer more than just your typical seasonal produce. These family-friendly markets are great places to enjoy live music, eat from delicious food trailers, and find unique treasures made by local artists.
With that said, farmers’ markets are more than just fun destinations, they’re how local farmers make a living. And when you purchase their produce and meats, you’re doing more than just supporting them, you’re nourishing your body, as well. While many of these crops may not be “certified organic,” they’re more than likely not sprayed with harmful pesticides and chemicals. Want to know for sure? Just ask the farmer! She or he will probably be there and will be very happy to talk about their practices. And when it comes to fresh produce, you can bet on it being nutrient dense, as it was picked that morning or the day before, instead of days, or even weeks, prior like in a supermarket.
I love taking my kiddo to the farmers’ markets and allowing her to see and taste seasonal items. It’s always a special time for my family because not only are we getting the freshest foods possible, we are interacting with and impacting our community.

Springdale Farm - open Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9am-1pm
Boggy Creek - open seasonally Wednesdays - Saturdays, 8am-1pm
Texas Farmers’ Market - open Saturdays at Lakeline Mall, 9am-1pm and on Sundays at Mueller, 10a-2pm
SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown and Sunset Valley - open Saturdays, 9am-1pm
Barton Creek Farmer’s Market - open Saturdays at Barton Creek Mall, 9am-1pm
HOPE - open Sundays at Plaza Saltillo 11am-3pm
Pflugerville Farmers’ Market - open Tuesdays at 901 Old Austin Hutto Road, 3-7pm

Below is a delicious and easy Spring/Summer Vegetable family-friendly recipe. Your kids will love throwing ingredients into a processor and hitting the button! Older kiddos love practicing their chopping skills with vegetables. This is my favorite kid-friendly knife. The sauce can be seasoned to your liking and top pretty much anything. You can also mix it in hummus or sour cream for a tasty dip. I hope you enjoy!
Roasted Carrots with Parsley Chimichurri Sauce
1 lb carrots
1 Tbsp cooking oil, such as coconut or avocado
1/2 cup fresh parsley (or cilantro or basil)
1/4 medium red onion
2 garlic cloves
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp coconut aminos
1 Tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees (alternatively, you can saute carrots in 1 Tbsp of pastured butter
on the stove until desired softness)
2. Clean and slice carrots in 1” rounds
3. Toss with 1 Tbsp cooking oil, such as coconut or avocado
4. Roast for 25 min
5. Meanwhile while carrots are roasting, mix rest of ingredients together in a food processor or
